NEW DELHI, JUNE 19 :  As severe heatwave conditions continue to prevail over the national capital, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday that the city recorded the warmest night ever in June since 1969, with Safadarjung’s temperature reaching 35.4 degrees Celsius last night.

The temperature recorded at the Safdarjung weather station is the highest in the last 55 years. The previous record was set at 34.7 degrees Celsius, according to IMD officials.

The northern parts of the country, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, will experience some relief from the severe heatwave conditions until June 21, under the influence of Western disturbances, the IMD official said.

According to IMD, the temperature in the city is likely to fall by 1-2 degrees Celsius in the coming days. Despite this relief, warm night conditions are very likely to prevail across Delhi for the next few days.

However, light rainfall and thunderstorms are very likely to occur over the region under the influence of Western disturbances.

“Heat wave conditions are likely to continue over many parts of North India except Uttar Pradesh during the next 24 hours and will gradually abate thereafter,” the IMD said.

“Heat wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of Jammu division, Himachal Pradesh, south Uttarakhand, Punjab, Bihar, Jharkhand, and Odisha today and thereafter; over Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on June 19 & 23,” the IMD said.

It further predicted that warm night conditions are very likely in some parts of East Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan on the 19th, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and West Uttar Pradesh till tomorrow.(UNI)
